A MOTHER AND her young son are among six people who were injured following a fire in Co Kerry.
The fire happened in the garden of a home in Killarney at around 10.20pm on Saturday, 13 June.
Six people, including men, women and children, were taken to hospital for the treatment of injuries sustained during the incident.
It’s understood that a woman and her young son suffered severe burns following the incident, which is said to have occurred around a fire pit.
While foul play is not suspected, a garda spokesperson said a technical examination of the scene has been conducted and investigations are ongoing.
The mayor of Killarney, councillor Martin Grady, described the incident as “heartbreaking”.
Speaking to RTÉ, he said it is a “reminder of how devastating and unpredictable this fire can be”.
“The community is close in that area, and our thoughts are certainly with those that are injured and their families, and all those who were affected by the event.”
He noted that neighbours were the first to help before emergency services arrived on the scene.
He praised the “fantastic work” of emergency services and added: “Only for them, I’m sure things would have been a lot worse.
“On behalf of myself and on the people of Killarney, I want to thank them and acknowledge the great work they do.”
