Known for their iconic tote bags, colourful dressing gowns and vibrant patterns, Costelloe and Costelloe was opened in 1999 by sister duo Mary and Margaret Costelloe. We speak to manager and designer Fiona Barnes about the brand’s story and legacy.
I’m Fiona Barnes, manager and designer at Costelloe and Costelloe, a fashion accessories shop based on Chatham Street, Dublin and online. My mum and aunt, Mary and Margaret Costelloe started the brand in 1999.
My mission with our designs is to bring colour to the world. Accessories are such an easy way to bring an outfit to life. Fashion has always been in my blood. When I was about three, I only wanted to play shop! So much so that my mum actually gave me an old broken cash register to play with. You’ll never be bored having your own shop. I love how every day is different, and we get to help people discover their style.
We have a wide range of accessories and homeware, from jewellery to handbags to fascinators to cushion covers. Our tote bags have been having a viral moment which has been so exciting for us – we’ve had tourists come in from all over the world after seeing us online.
The logistics
Luckily money has not been a concern because I was lucky enough to come into an established business with a strong track record.
The best business advice for me, is that it’s important to have ambition but avoid over reaching. Finding something you’re good at, and being passionate about doing it well, is the key.
Something I’ve learnt is that you don’t always have to go into every idea in a massive way. Not everything you try will work, and that’s ok. Try new ideas on a small scale, get customers reactions and go from there.
The names to know
A brand I love at the moment is Sister Jane, I adore their dresses. I find their silhouette really flattering on my body shape, and you really can’t beat their quality for the price point!
For fashion inspiration I am currently loving Kate O’Connell and Dr Sinead Ryan. Their vibe captures everything I love about fashion, they really use their clothes to express themselves.
My best fashion purchase has to be a black cashmere scarf, a real staple in my wardrobe and great for travel too.
Some other Irish brands I love are Aoife McNamara and Chupi, who’s just around the corner from us! It’s always great to see Irish women doing so well in business.
The legacy
A proud moment in business for me is maybe a small thing but it’s seeing one of our quilted Cotton Totes out in the wild. Nothing beats the feeling of seeing customers love something you’re so passionate about.
I want Costelloe and Costelloe to be known for being different and quirky. In a world of neutrals I really hope we’re remembered for our colourful treasure-trove of designs.
In terms of seeing someone in our designs, I adore Jessica O’Mahony’s style and would love to see her trying out some pieces! The late great Iris Apfel will always be such a fashion inspiration to me and she was someone we always hoped would have approved of our collection of costume jewellery.
