Where to stay

Lost Cottage, Glenbeigh

Lost Cottage. Photo: Ruth Maria Murphy

For an escape that truly helps you slow down, Lost Cottage in Glenbeigh overlooks Caragh Lake and the breathtaking surrounding landscape. The once ruined cottage has been carefully restored by its owner into a luxury hideaway, without losing the charm that makes it unique. Local craftsmanship is evident everywhere, while a modern poured concrete extension makes use of floor-to-ceiling windows so you can immerse yourself in the landscape. Make use of the sauna, or take a bath under the stars thanks to the glass-roofed bathroom – the area is an International Dark Sky Reserve, so you’re guaranteed a spectacular show.

Sheen Falls Lodge, Kenmare

This five-star country estate, awarded the prestigious two Michelin Key distinction, is the perfect place for a luxurious retreat. Choose from one of their classic rooms, or one of their traditional cottages for extra privacy, and incredible views. With several dining options during your stay, from fine dining at The Falls Restaurant to relaxed sophistication at The Stables Brasserie or afternoon tea in The Sheen Lounge, there’s something for all tastes. Plus with a spa on site, a range of outdoor activities to choose from, and an 18-hole golf course, you can curate your own perfect blend of relaxation and diversion.

Cahernane House Hotel, Killarney

Set in a private estate on the edge of Killarney National Park, this boutique four-star hotel is close to Killarney town centre, yet feels in a world all its own. Originally a manor house constructed in 1877, it holds onto its historic character, including details in rooms including antique pieces and original ceiling beams. Decadent wallpaper, bed canopies and free-standing baths set the tone for a stay that’s plush and restful. After a day exploring the national park, dine at Herbert’s Brasserie for seasonal, locally sourced dishes, or opt for the more casual Cellar Bar.

Where to eat

Solas, Dingle

Head to the colourful fishing town of Dingle to enjoy Spanish plates made with Irish produce at Michelin Bib Gourmand spot Solas. The team grow their own organic vegetables, raise hens for organic eggs and harvest honey from their six beehives, ensuring that they have access to the freshest seasonal ingredients for chef-owner Nicky Foley to put a Spanish spin on. The menu, a mix of small and medium plates, changes regularly, but expect plenty of seafood alongside locally sourced meat.

Lagom, Kenmare

Run by husband-and-wife team Brendan and Liz Byrne, Lagom is based on the idea of balance, of things being “just right”, and this restaurant feels exactly that. It’s evident in every detail, from the pared-back interior, punctuated by spindly birch branches, to the food which offers comfort and surprise in equal measure. Brendan makes use of live-fire cooking in many of the dishes, adding char, smokiness and a touch of oak to the produce sourced from a range of local suppliers.

Tango, Killarney

For something unexpected, Tango is a must-visit for its authentic Argentinian menu. From parilla – traditional barbecue using local Kerry meat – to empanadas, pockets of dough stuffed with various fillings, plus wood-fired pizzas and traditional Argentine baked goods, you’ll want to try as much as possible. Starting off as a food truck before progressing to a permanent location, this crowd-pleasing spot is definitely worth stopping off for.

Where to shop

Begley & Bowie, Kenmare

For a souvenir that’s out of the ordinary, look no further than Begley & Bowie in Kenmare. Spot the shop’s bubblegum front door on Henry Street, and inside you’ll find Doireann Healy’s colourful collection of art, clothing and homeware. Each piece is undeniably joyful, and will be the perfect reminder of your trip for years to come. Pick up a print to hang on your wall, a slogan sweater or a fun mug to enjoy your morning coffee from.

Nest, Kenmare

Situated in the heart of Kenmare, Nest is a gem of a store that stocks stylish clothing, homeware, gifts, toys and stationery. Brands such as Ilse Jacobsen and Rains will help keep the weather at bay if needed, while find local crafts and books for a chic keepsake. The kind of shop where you’ll find treasures you didn’t even know you wanted, it’s definitely worth carving out time to visit.

Macbees, Killarney

One of Ireland’s first luxury boutiques, Macbees has been a mainstay of Killarney since 1984 and is still a must-visit for fashion lovers. There, you’ll find a curated edit of over 60 brands including Queens of Archive, Essentiel Antwerp, and Stine Goya, not to mention Irish brands such as August Night, Roisin Linnane and Tidings. Their team of advisers is on hand to help you find the perfect piece, from everyday essentials to showstopping occasion outfits.
