If there is one shift I am seeing clearly in Irish weddings right now, it is this: couples want personality.

More couples are broadening their search beyond the traditional ballroom and asking other questions – does this venue feel like us? Does it create the right atmosphere? Will our guests actually remember it? Can we shape the day our own way? And most importantly, does it have ‘the vibes’? 

I spend a lot of time visiting wedding venues, and while I’ve seen incredible celebrations in every kind of setting, I’ve realised I’m naturally drawn to the venues that have a little extra personality and a strong sense of atmosphere and quite often, are off the beaten track.

From woodland hideaways and private estates to stylish lakeside stays and tucked-away historic spaces, these are my top ten off-beat wedding venues in Ireland.

1. Drumhierney Woodland Hideaway, Co Leitrim

For the couple who wants to go off the grid

This venue only recently came onto my radar when I had the pleasure of visiting it before Christmas, and I have to say, it completely surprised me. Tucked away in the Leitrim woodlands, Drumhierney Woodland Hideaway feels like a genuine escape and your own mini village.

There is an immediate sense of calm the moment you arrive, surrounded by trees, nature, a wellness zone and that lovely feeling of being somewhere truly tucked away. We are talking completely off the grid. If you want something immersive, intimate and a little less expected, this is a very strong contender.

2. Rock Farm Slane, Co Meath

For the chilled couple chasing festival vibes

If your dream wedding is less of a formal banquet and more of a laid-back, stylish celebration, Rock Farm Slane is such a strong contender. This is one for the couples who want festival energy, but done well.

Part of the wider Slane estate, it comes with views towards Slane Castle, natural wellness areas, outdoor space and alternative accommodation from yurts to glamping. The Barn offers DIY in all the right ways, with BBQs, flexibility and the kind of setup that allows couples to build a wedding that feels genuinely personal.

3. Segrave Barns, Co Louth

For the couple who wants rustic romance with an edge

I attended a wedding here and absolutely loved it. Segrave Barns strikes that elusive balance of feeling both relaxed and elevated. Close to the sea (ideal for a dip on the morning of or after the wedding) and surrounded by countryside, the barn itself is full of warmth and character, with a backdrop that feels romantic rather than overly polished.

And yes, there are alpacas. It has real personality, but the food and guest experience are strong too, which is what makes it more than just a pretty setting.

4. The Old Rectory, Co Leitrim

For the couple who want a deeply personal, micro-wedding

On my recent trip to Leitrim, this was another venue that really stood out. The Old Rectory feels perfectly aligned with the growing demand for smaller, more intimate weddings in meaningful locations.

It is a home away from home. It has a warmth and softness to it that is hard to describe until you see it in person. For couples moving away from the big traditional format and leaning into a close-circle celebration with beautiful surroundings and a slower pace, this is a gorgeous option.

5. Hotel Doolin, Co Clare

For the couple who want West Coast soul, music and exceptional food

Hotel Doolin is one of those venues that quietly gets so much right. It has character in abundance, but it is also one of the strongest examples I have seen of a venue really embracing sustainability without compromising on experience.

The food here is exceptional, genuinely one of its biggest strengths, and much of the venue is powered by its solar energy system, which says a lot about its ethos. Add in the music culture of Doolin and the Atlantic setting (jump into the seaweed baths), and it becomes so much more than a wedding venue; it feels like a real getaway.

6. The Rabbit Hotel & Retreat, Co Antrim

For the couple who want playful design and a real sense of fun

Now for something completely different. If someone told you they were getting married at a hotel, you might think you know what to expect, but not at The Rabbit. The interiors are bold, playful and design-led from the moment you walk in, and it quickly becomes clear this is not a standard hotel setup.

The wedding spaces are strong, from the Boat House Ceremony Suite that overlooks the lake to – we need to take a moment for it – the iconic ballroom that gives Hogwarts vibes. The atmosphere is fun, and the beach club, complete with sand, beach bar and pool, is the real clincher. Stylish, a little unexpected and ideal for couples who want the venue itself to be part of the talking point.

7. Ballintubbert House & Gardens, Co Laois

For the romantic couple who want a private estate feel with a unique edge

I came across Ballintubbert years ago, and it has always stayed with me. It is one of those venues that leaves a lasting impression because it feels so distinct. Romantic, intimate and full of atmosphere, it has that private estate quality that makes the whole day feel incredibly personal.

One of the standout details is that you can host part of your wedding in a yurt, which immediately tells you this is not a copy-and-paste venue. It is ideal for couples who want something refined and beautiful, but still a little off-centre from the expected.

8. Dromquinna Manor, Co Kerry

For the couple who want an outdoor wedding with a serious wow factor

Dromquinna Manor is one of those venues that really knows what it is and does it exceptionally well. Ran by John Brennan, it’s set on a stunning waterfront estate in Kerry, overlooking Kenmare Bay and the Atlantic beyond. It has built a strong reputation for weddings that feel polished, scenic and wonderfully relaxed.

The ceremony takes place in the beautiful I Do Pavilion, which is a huge part of the magic here, with those incredible views doing so much of the work for you, before guests move into the Manor for a reception in the Oak Room. It also stepped further into the spotlight recently as the wedding venue of choice for Derry Girls star Saoirse-Monica Jackson. Spacious, scenic and a little bit different, it is easy to see why it is so well regarded.

9. The Abbey, Athy, Co Kildare

For the couple who want a hidden gem with real character

Now bear with me on this one, because yes, The Abbey is located in Athy, but I still firmly believe it belongs on this list. It is one of those places you could easily drive past without ever realising what is tucked away behind it. Once inside, it feels like a genuine hidden gem. There is character, privacy and a real sense of atmosphere, which is rare for somewhere so central.

One of its biggest draws is the stunning historic abbey itself, which offers a truly memorable ceremony setting. Distinctive, atmospheric and full of personality, this is a brilliant option.

10. Glasson Lakehouse, Co Westmeath

For the couple who want modern lakefront luxury with a social edge

Finally, how could I not include Glasson Lakehouse? This is one of the strongest examples of a venue that feels modern, cool and experience-led, while still delivering on all the major wedding-day expectations. Overlooking the lake, with an outdoor pool, beach bar and a strong design aesthetic throughout, it has that contemporary energy so many couples are now drawn to.

It feels less like a traditional wedding venue and more like a stylish luxury escape, which is exactly why it stands out. If atmosphere and guest experience are high on your list, Glasson is a very strong contender.
