Send Time Optimization (STO) is a data-driven technique used to determine the best time to deliver a message to each individual user. Rather than relying on generic rules like “send on Tuesday mornings,” STO uses behavioral data and machine learning to predict when a user is most likely to engage with a message.

STO is most commonly applied to email campaigns, but it is increasingly used across push notifications, SMS and in-app messaging. It is a key component of modern journey orchestration and personalization strategies.

Why Timing Matters

Traditional batch-and-blast campaigns send the same message to every recipient at the same time. This approach ignores the diversity of user habits. Some people check emails over breakfast, others during their commute, and many scroll late at night. STO adapts to these patterns, increasing the likelihood of engagement.

For example, a campaign sent at 8 am might perform well with early risers, but poorly with night owls. STO identifies these nuances and adjusts delivery accordingly.
