A Rock-Era Classic: The Dr. Martens 1461 Silhouette Turns...
Alexis Mikulski Ruiz · 2026-06-13 · via Rolling Stone

As Motown and rock & roll transformed popular culture, a now-iconic shoe quietly began building a legacy of its own

Sixty-five years ago, John F. Kennedy was inaugurated as president, the first human was launched into space, and in fashion history, Dr. Martens introduced what would become one of its most famous silhouettes: the 1461 shoe.

The second style ever released by the British footwear brand, the 1461 arrived just one year after the drop of the now-iconic 1460 boot. First produced in England in 1961, the low, understated style quickly found an audience of its own, eventually becoming one of the most beloved designs in the company’s catalog.

Originally created for workers and anyone spending long days on their feet, the 1461 was focused on durability. Over the decades, though, it evolved far beyond its practical beginnings. Today, the shoe can be spotted everywhere from city streets to festival grounds, worn by famous faces like Tyler, the Creator, and Kendall Jenner.

More than six decades later, the 1461 remains one of Dr. Martens’ best-selling styles. While the silhouette itself has stayed largely unchanged, the range of available colors and finishes has expanded dramatically. Shoppers can choose from sleek monochrome versions, pairs accented with bold white stitching, or bubblegum-pink iterations that pop.

What’s perhaps most impressive is how closely some versions still resemble the original shoes produced nearly 65 years ago. Styles carrying the “Made in England” tag are crafted using many of the same techniques that made the original version so popular. But, no matter which version you choose, you’re still getting the signature construction that has defined Dr. Martens throughout time.

The 1461’s story is also deeply intertwined with music culture. When the shoe first arrived in 1961, The Beach Boys were beginning to take shape, Ben E. King’s “Stand by Me” had just been released, and rock & roll and Motown were everywhere. Now, in the year 2026, those musical moments continue to endure, much like the shoe itself.

The Dr. Martens 1461 is currently available through the brand’s website, with prices starting at $150. At the time of writing, a wide range of sizes, colors, and finishes remains available for shoppers looking to add a piece of footwear history to their collection.
