Although no other stars from the franchise are officially attached, Paramount announced that the threequel is a go

Now that Tom Cruise has filmed the supposed final Mission: Impossible movie, the 63-year-old can now make more Top Gun movies. Paramount confirmed that a second sequel to the 1986 hit film was in the works, following up the 2022 blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick. The film studio announced Top Gun 3 during its CinemaCon panel this week, according to The Guardian.

The newspaper reports that no other stars from the franchise have signed onto the sequel yet, though producer Jerry Bruckheimer is attached. The Guardian noted that Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is not yet part of the project.

“We pitched Tom a story he liked,” Bruckheimer told People in 2024. “But he’s a very in-demand actor and he’s got a lot of movies lined up, so we have to wait and see.” In the interview, Bruckheimer said he admired Cruise because “he’s really engaged in every part of the process.”

Last year, Cruise told the Australian talk show Today that the idea of a third Top Gun movie had been in his thoughts. “Yeah, we’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible,” he said. “It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick.” The actor added that there were “numerous other films” he was working on. “I’m always shooting a film, prepping a film, posting a film,” he said. He also teased his upcoming role in Digger, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s upcoming movie, in the interview.

Since Top Gun: Maverick took in $1.5 billion at the box office, a remarkable feat in the streaming era, Paramount and its parent company, Skydance, has considered a third film in the franchise a priority, per the The Guardian. Skydance, which intends to fuse Paramount with Warner Bros., wants Top Gun 3 to come out along with 30 other movies a year, including an adaptation of the video game Call of Duty and a new horror movie related to Longlegs.
