Ariana Grande Is Sorry You’re So Into Her on ‘Hate That I...

It’s the first taste of the star’s eighth studio album Petal

Ariana Grande has released “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” the first single from her upcoming album Petal. The song was produced by her long-time collaborator Ilya alongside Max Martin.

The buoyant pop song sees Grande reflecting on a lost love who may have had stronger feelings for her than she did for them. “Hate that I made you love me,” she croons over a shimmering, ambient instrumental backdrop. “Sorry if I made me your type/ Yeah, I hate that I made you love me/ ‘Cause I barely tried.”

An official music video for “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” directed by Christian Breslauer, will premiere on Monday, June 1 at 8 a.m. PST.

Beyond the lead single, not much is currently known about Grande’s eighth album Petal, except that it was executive produced and co-written by Grande and Ilya. Before its reveal, the singer joked that she would need “an extra brain and four more arms” to release another album. Upon the LP’s announcement, she described the record as “a little feral.”

“It was kind of about breaking up with all different kinds of negative attachments — whether it’s my own monsters in my own head, external voices, things that no longer serve me,” she said. “It was a writing experiment for me to use that as a template so that I could be talking about one thing and sharing something, and people could use it however they want and apply it to their own lives.”

Trending Stories

Last week, Grande celebrated the 10th anniversary of her album Dangerous Woman by officially releasing “Knew Better Part Two,” a long-time fan favorite that didn’t make the final cut. Grande’s previous album Eternal Sunshine was released in 2024 via Republic Records. She kept busy appearing in the blockbuster stage-to-screen adaptations of Wicked, playing Glinda the Good Witch (her long time dream role).

The pop star’s year isn’t slowing down anytime soon, either. Grande will kick off the Eternal Sunshine Tour in Oakland on June 6 and Petal arrives July 31 via BabyDoll/Republic Records. Later this November, she will star in Focker In-Law with Ben Stiller and Robert DeNiro, and in 2027, Grande will return to the stage in the West End revival of Sunday in the Park With George, playing Dot alongside Wicked co-star Jonathan Bailey.
