In 1959, a British industrialist launched a contest to inspire human-powered flight innovation. For two decades, teams spent years on designs only to watch them shatter in production. Then, engineer Paul MacCready reframed the problem. The challenge was never human-powered flight, it was the slow rebuild-test-relearn cycle. So, he built a plane from plastic, tubing, and wire that he could repair in hours instead of months. Suddenly, he could fly, fail, and fix three times in a single day; he won the prize in under a year.
