In 1959, a British industrialist launched a contest to inspire human-powered flight innovation. For two decades, teams spent years on designs only to watch them shatter in production. Then, engineer Paul MacCready reframed the problem. The challenge was never human-powered flight, it was the slow rebuild-test-relearn cycle. So, he built a plane from plastic, tubing, and wire that he could repair in hours instead of months. Suddenly, he could fly, fail, and fix three times in a single day; he won the prize in under a year.

MacCready’s lesson—the problem is we don’t understand the problem—is one IT leaders are now facing, untangling years of VMware operational muscle. The wrong problem is which hypervisor do we use? The right problem is how do we design so that runtimes are commoditized, and platforms are futureproof?

The more things change, the more they stay the same

Enterprise IT is no exception to change, often changing faster than other business functions. Each change feels like a breaking point, but they’re really just another turn of the wheel. Recount the days of mainframe to client server or physical to virtualized servers.

The Broadcom acquisition of VMware is an obvious IT change. Many organizations are still trying to determine what to do about their virtualization estates. Renewal price pressure, coupled with hardware pricing and the AI tsunami, has increased the urgency.

This acquisition didn’t create instability, but rather revealed just how much was already present. Relying so much on a single vendor hid risk that is now out in the open. A widely shared essay from a veteran virtualization engineer made the rounds recently with a sobering reflection on the roadblocks to change. The reason isn’t nostalgia. Over 25 years, VMware didn’t just ship a hypervisor; it became the basis for operational muscle, the language of sysadmins, an ecosystem of integrations, and a toolkit that scaled enterprise efficiency.

That’s why a migration framed as a single quarter can extend to a 12-month project. The hypervisor is just one part. The complexity is everything wired around it: the reflex of the management console, capacity planning, backup and storage integrations, networking plans, DR runbooks, and more. That’s the hill to climb and the takeaway is one MacCready would recognize: design for change, and do so at a pace your operations can absorb.

It’s about the operating model, not the runtime

HPE has been designing for unpredictability for years engineering GreenLake as a flexible, service-driven platform for on-prem as-a-Service (aaS). This was an early-on option for elastic scale and simplified service delivery.

But unlike other OEM aaS programs, HPE acquisitions of Zerto in 2021, OpsRamp in 2023, and Morpheus Data in 2024 were intentional to enable the hybrid cloud operating model. What started with GreenLake evolved into what is now a software strategy to underpin the Great VM Reset. Every offering is a layer in a system designed to give you freedom and agility:

  1. Abstraction over attachment: Avoid tight coupling—to a single hypervisor or cloud; pull apps away from your infrastructure with loosely coupled service interfaces.
  2. Tear down that wall: Adopt one interface point to manage across environments with standardized provisioning, policies, governance, and automation.
  3. App-centric runtime flexibility: Architect so virtual machines (VMs), containers, and bare metal can coexist and workloads can live anywhere. Don’t chase parity, prioritize criticality.
  1. Embrace agentic simplicity: Next-gen management will take abstraction further. Model Context Protocol (MCP) and inference assistance overcome skill gaps and operational inertia.

Mapped against the very pain points that make leaving hard, HPE answers them one by one. HPE Morpheus restores the single control plane and self-service reflex that teams thought only the old console could give them—it includes a built-in enterprise runtime, makes VMware better, plus integrates the other alternatives side by side, so you are never forced to switch all at once. HPE OpsRamp Software brings AIOps-driven monitoring, forecasting, and remediation that goes well beyond vROps. HPE Zerto Software (named after Zero RTO) nails orchestrated failover and failback but extends to cyber resiliency and workload mobility. And because the HVM hypervisor is simply one runtime option among many, VMs, containers, and bare metal coexist under one roof—no big-bang cutover required. HPE even provides built-in migration tooling and access to external tools to smooth the transition.

None of this pretends the genuinely sticky pieces—deep network micro segmentation, agentless introspection, or a specific ISV certification—disappear overnight. That is exactly why designing for change beats chasing a clean break: keep what must stay on VMware for now, move what is ready, and run all of it through one operating model and a growing HPE partner ecosystem. HPE is built to be both the exit ramp and the hedge.

This system is built to assist with any migration needs, but also evolutionary needs. While moving off any legacy platform is a goal for many, organizations need to prove that their system can evolve. What’s new and what’s next

The gap between good enough and ready for your most demanding workloads has shrunk in the last year for thousands of clusters . . . and it is about to close further.   • Agentic AI: HPE Morpheus Software version 9.0 moves beyond simple scripts to intelligent, context-aware operations to enable users to use plain-language prompting to run tasks and manage complex workflows.
  • Universal runtime updates and additions: Features like Kubernetes-CNCF certification (to help ensure consistent and compliant K8s experience across all environments), autoscaler for K8s (to dynamically manage resource demand), and stretched cluster for HVM (provides greater resilience and disaster recovery options across physical locations) contribute to the evolution of standardizing and supporting various types of workloads.
  • Governance priorities remain: Introducing microsegmentation for zero trust in support of advanced network security features, and further enhancing multitenancy allows cloud service providers and large enterprises to isolate workloads and manage access more effectively.
  • AI-powered insights for FinOps and operations: Integration with HPE OpsRamp Software provides AI-powered observability, giving administrators deep insights into application health and performance; introduction of HPE Morpheus Central, a new centralized hub for monitoring global operations and high-level appliance health across distributed environments; and optimizing service provider expenditures with HPE Cloud Commit, which provides a strategic financial advantage by allowing organizations to replace restrictive legacy licensing programs from competitors with a flexible, pay-as-you-go structure.*
  • Broader toolset for better developer and administrative support: Introduces native, integrated data protection services directly with HVM, and administrators can now configure AI agents that utilize MCP servers to query the IT stack, perform security reviews, or investigate resource spikes.
  • More features in relation to SDN and third-party ecosystem: Support for VXLAN-based overlay networking provides more flexible and scalable software-defined networking options, and the tight integration with HPE Zerto Software allows for friction-less migration from VMware environments.

These new features and programs are all aimed squarely at the operational gaps that have been holding teams back. Paired with a steadily expanding ecosystem of HPE technology and channel partners, the direction is unmistakable: fewer reasons to stay locked in, and more ways to evolve on your own terms.

HPE offers more than just a solution that’s future thinking; the emotional payoff is really the strategic part. When IT leaders remove forced decisions, rushed migrations, and a single point of failure from their day to day, peace of mind is impossible to put a price on.

There will be another inevitable shift after this one, and another after that, and so on. Organizations need to be cognizant not only of what they run today, but also how easily they can pivot tomorrow when the change does come. MacCready won his prize not by building the perfect airplane, but by building one he could rebuild in an afternoon.
