New visual workflow builder in HPE Morpheus Software 9.0 lets admins see complex automation at a glance, reduce context switching, and make changes with more confidence.
If you’ve spent time in HPE Morpheus Software building automation, you know workflows are where the real power lives. They wire together tasks across phases, help enforce standards, and keep day‑2 operations moving. But the way they’ve been built hasn’t always matched how complex those workflows have become.
Today, even a simple workflow can span multiple phases, nested workflows, and conditional branches. In practice, that has meant clicking through forms, jumping in and out of the task library, and trying to keep the whole flow in your head while making a small change.
Before the new visual workflow builder, you would go to Library → Automations → Workflows, pick your workflow type, and start adding tasks one by one.
The friction shows up quickly:
Tasks and workflows live in separate places, so you leave the editor to create or adjust a task, then come back and wire it in. That constant context-switch slows down even simple changes.
Branching exists, but you mostly see it as forms and lists, not as a flow, which makes it harder to spot gaps or mistakes before they show up in production.
As workflows grow, understanding what runs when gets harder for anyone who did not build them, often requiring whiteboard walkthroughs and working sessions to explain how a script‑driven flow hangs together. That slows down changes and increases the risk that only a few people really understand critical workflows.
HPE Morpheus remains capable. It just means common admin work—adding a task, adjusting a branch, or reviewing an existing workflow—takes more effort than it should.
The point is not to change what workflows do, but to make them easier to build, read, and maintain. With HPE Morpheus Software 9.0, workflows can be built and edited in a visual canvas. Instead of working from a list, you can see phases, tasks, branches, and nested workflows laid out as connected nodes in one view.
A few changes matter right away:
Add tasks directly from the canvas, without leaving your place.
Follow conditional branches as actual paths, with clearer success and failure flow.
See nested workflows as part of the same picture, instead of piecing them together mentally.
In this example, a standard virtual machine (VM) provisioning workflow spans configuration, cost review, provisioning, and post‑provision checks, with a simple branch to handle validation failures.
Figure 1. Automation: Visual workflow builder
A fair question is what happens to workflows you already built. The answer is: they still work, and they can be opened in the new visual builder because the underlying workflow model has not changed. In other words, the new visual workflow builder is fully backward compatible with your existing workflows.
Teams can move between the visual view and the traditional forms at their own pace. Export/import and infrastructure‑as‑code options also remain in place; so, this is an experience change, not a breaking change.
Most admins are not looking for a new UI for its own sake. They want a faster way to make changes and a clearer way to understand what already exists.
The visual builder helps in a few practical ways:
You can insert a task where it belongs, instead of building around the limits of a form flow.
You can show a teammate what a workflow does without walking through screen after screen.
You can come back later and understand your own branching logic faster.
That matters for the person building the workflow today, and it matters just as much for the person maintaining it later. If you already have workflows in HPE Morpheus, start by opening one you know well under Library → Automations → Workflows and switching it to the visual view. Make one small, low‑risk change to see how the new builder feels in your own environment.
