Inside HPE Morpheus Minute: A closer look at storage types in HPE Morpheus Software

This blog goes into the customer value of the storage type feature within HPE Morpheus Software.

Welcome to this deep dive into the latest HPE Morpheus Minute on storage types in the HPE Morpheus Software family. (For clarification, we are talking about storage from the management level, not the hypervisor level.)

We all know workloads aren’t created equal, and different functionality requires different solutions (or types of storage) for those workloads. Depending on your use case—from backups to logs to databases to capacity pools, to name a few—how you store your workload is important to how consistently your environment will run.

In today’s hybrid norm, consistency and accessibility are critical, and HPE Morpheus Software (HPE Morpheus Enterprise Software and HPE Morpheus VM Essentials Software) helps users by standardizing how different storage types are deployed and managed.

Check out the HPE Morpheus Minute demonstrating how easy it is to add various types of storage within the platform:

 HPE Morpheus Minute: Storage

You may be asking yourself. . . what storage type should I use for my different use cases? Follow along with the earlier video to see how simple it is to add and manage the different storage types in your environment.

  • Buckets can be used for larger-scale object storage, and are ideal for backups, logs, and unstructured data.
  • File shares are ideal for shared storage with team data and apps—especially in collaborative environments—and are accessible across multiple systems.
  • Volumes (or block storage) really speak volumes when it comes to high-performance persistent storage and attach themselves to workloads such as disks.
  • Data stores are the backbone of infrastructure that powers workload storage and represent storage pools across hypervisors, clouds, or arrays.
  • Servers can be used for temporary, cache, or local processing, and may not persist beyond the instance.

Also, lucky for HPE customers, HPE Morpheus Enterprise provides the orchestration and automation alongside legacy HPE storage options. Whether you’re running cloud-native infrastructure on HPE Alletra, adaptive flash storage on HPE Nimble Storage, or consumption-based infrastructure on GreenLake, HPE Morpheus Enterprise gains a powerful foundation for scalability and resilience.

Which HPE storage options can be used for which storage types? See the following chart for a convenient reference:

  1. Block storage/volumes (SAN-style: iSCSI/FC volumes, VM datastores backed by block)

Best fit: HPE Alletra Storage MP B10000 as the block foundation under HPE Morpheus Software based private cloud and VM estates, including dHCI packaging in HPE Private Cloud Business Edition.

  1. File storage (NAS-style: NFS/SMB shares)

Best fit: HPE Alletra Storage MP X10000 when the requirement is file-centric scale and unstructured growth while staying in the same unified data plane story.

  1. Object storage (S3-style buckets / object application programming interface [APIs])

Best fit: HPE Alletra Storage MP X10000 for object-first repositories, data lake patterns, and AI pipelines that want object semantics.

  1. HCI-style datastore experience (integrated storage with the cluster)

Best fit: HPE SimpliVity when the customer wants an HCI operational model for VM environments in HPE Morpheus VM Essentials Software and HPE Morpheus Enterprise Software. In HPE Private Cloud Business Edition terms, disaggregated hyperconverged infrastructure (dHCI) uses HPE Alletra Storage MP B10000; HCI uses HPE SimpliVity.

HPE Morpheus Software standardizes how storage is consumed across environments while HPE storage platforms provide the solid infrastructure that delivers performance, scalability, and resilience underneath. It’s a powerful combination that avoids the abstraction and complexity that storage is often known for. Customers gain control and flexibility, as well as peace of mind that their environment is in good, scalable hands with HPE.
