The first time I used Dyson’s green laser head, it was borderline horrifying. On floors that looked clean to the naked eye, the V15 Detect suddenly revealed layers of dust, hair, and crumbs I normally wouldn’t notice until sunlight hit at the right angle. In Layman’s terms, green light appears brighter to our eyes than red or blue at the same power level, which makes particles stand out more clearly on hard floors.

Research on light scattering and dust visibility also come into play here, too. An NIH study on laser-based dust detection shows that illumination can make tiny particles significantly easier to see depending on factors like particle size and viewing angle. This broader concept backs Dyson’s main idea: Projecting a green laser across the floor at a shallow angle can make dust and debris more visible.

In my own testing, the effect is most dramatic under furniture and on lighter laminate floors. I’m able to give more attention to the areas that need it, which provides for a much more thorough clean. Some brands have started to imitate Dyson with their own designs, like Tineco and its Pure One Station 5 Pro I recently tested, or Roborock’s H60 Hub Ultra. But few can match up to the same level of power and intuitiveness. Years later, the V15 Detect’s green laser remains one of the main reasons I still recommend it as the best cordless stick vacuum.
