An Oil Rig Was Producing 15 Million Gallons of Oil Every ...

On December 22, 1972, a joint venture of four oil companies discovered the deepwater Piper oilfield. After conducting seismic mapping, they confirmed the area—located in the North Sea roughly halfway between Aberdeen, Scotland, and Bergen, Norway—was in fact a productive reservoir. By December 1976, four years after the oil field’s initial discovery, the Piper Alpha oil rig (operated by Occidental Petroleum) began production, eventually providing 10 percent of the U.K.’s oil and gas production.

For years, the Piper Alpha platform was the world’s single largest oil producer. At its height, it produced a staggering 15.1 million gallons of oil every day, exporting its black gold to the Orkney Islands via a 128-mile-long sub-sea line. But its name is now remembered for something else entirely: on the night of July 6, 1988, escaping gas condensate ignited jet fires that caused a tragic disaster.

After being retrofitted in 1978 for the additional production of natural gas, Piper Alpha primarily operated in two phases. The first phase simply flared excess gas as it had done before the retrofit, and in Phase 2, the gas was additionally exported to the Orkneys. Three days before the disaster, a major overhaul of the platform involved six separate projects, one of which involved replacing some of the natural gas equipment.

Piper Alpha also contained four modules, each associated with different facets of oil production. These included the wellhead module (A), the oil separation module (B), the gas compression module (C), and the utilities and power generation module (D). On the night of June 6, trouble started brewing in module C, which contained two pumps (pump A and pump B). During work for a permit on pump A, a pressure safety valve was removed and placed with a blind flange (a disk-like plate) that wasn’t leak tested. And because of the complicated way that various work permits were organized on Piper Alpha, the evening crew simply didn’t know that the pressure valve on pump A was missing.

So, when pump B shut off due to a mechanical problem at 9:45 p.m., the workers—eager to keep up with production schedules—restarted pump A, and gas condensate began escaping through the temporary blind flange. The resulting explosion created a series of subsequent explosions that rocked the oil platform, and in little more than an hour, the weakened platform began to slide into the sea. The collapse pulled the four-story accommodation module down into the ocean, killing all 81 workers inside. By morning, three-quarters of the structure above the water line had tumbled into the sea. It took weeks to eventually douse the fire.

Although 61 people escaped with their lives, the gas fires and subsequent explosions killed a total of 167 people, making it the deadliest offshore oil rig accident in history. Within a week of the disaster, the Secretary of State for Energy appointed Lord Cullen to lead an inquiry into its causes. When the findings were eventually published in November of 1990, they revealed for the first time that what had ultimately ended the lives of more than 160 men was a missing pressure valve caused by a tragic work permit mix-up.

On the third anniversary of the disaster, Queen Elizabeth II unveiled a memorial at Hazlehead Park in Aberdeen, and a casket of unknown ashes were interred within the memorial’s plinth. Today, Piper Bravo (built in 1992) operates in the North Sea—though an emergency shutdown in early January of 2026 has kept the platform offline for months—and the memorial remains the only lasting testament to one of the worst oil disasters the world has ever seen.
