To mark the sixtieth anniversary of the monumental partnership, the audio maker released a special-edition version of its Acton III Bluetooth home speaker— with a trippier, more tactile twist.

The Marshall x Hendrix 60th Anniversary Acton III sets itself apart from standard models with a purple velvet exterior and a grille featuring a psychedelic print in the same color. The speaker also has silver buttons and control knobs with purple accents, along with matching indicator lights. To top things off, the unique Acton III features a silver metal plaque with an all-seeing eye, the names of Jimi Hendrix and Marshall founder Jim Marshall, and the years marking the anniversary.

I can personally vouch that the speaker is a bona fide centerpiece and conversation starter, even when not in use. “Purple Haze,” arguably one of Hendrix’s most famous songs, kept looping in my head the moment I saw it for the first time. Placing the speaker on my work desk and displaying it at home during a recent get-together got me a lot of compliments, too.

Acoustically, the Marshall Acton III is stellar and worth upgrading to even without the special Hendrix treatment. The speaker delivered a balanced, detail-rich stereo sound when put through its paces, with its treble easy to adjust via rotating knobs. Its onboard wired audio input, on the other hand, brought me a welcome bit of early-2000s nostalgia by letting me connect a digital media player via cable and listen to my old MP3 collection.
