Outdoor Market Patio Umbrella

Pros

  • Durable steel pole
  • Thick canopy fabric available in multiple colors

One of the most impressive patio umbrellas we tested—also a great value—is this model from Best Choice Products. Its polyester canopy fabric is thicker than you'd expect for an umbrella at this price point, with (mostly) straight stitching and well-finished edges. There’s even a thick Velcro strap, which tightly secures it when closed.

The frame construction and features are equally notable, with a powder coating on the robust steel pole, ribs, and a hand crank for opening and closing the canopy. While there was some light resistance as we cranked it open, it was still easily one of the smoother hand cranks that we tried out.

The canopy operates using a well-designed hand crank and the push-button tilt locks into place with a satisfying click. This also made it easier to know when the umbrella was actually set at the desired level.

The patio umbrella comes in a decent selection of colors, too. That said, like most patio umbrellas, you’ll have to pay extra for a base. Even factoring that in, this patio umbrella represents some of the best value without sacrificing frame or materials quality.

9-Foot Patio Umbrella

Pros

  • Smooth crank handle and easy push-button tilt
  • Meets sustainability criteria

This affordable patio umbrella is a great budget pick without sacrificing on the quality. The frame offers plenty of durability, with a rust-resistant pole, steel ribs, and a double canopy for ventilation. A crank handle makes it easy to open and close, while you can tilt the canopy to your preferred angle with the push of a button.

The canopy material itself is equally sturdy, waterproof, and fade-resistant. It also has a UPF 50+ rating for extra sun protection. Choose from seven colorways, including a couple of light neutrals as well as bright, summery colors that will make a stylish statement on your patio. It’s even certified to the Global Recycled Standard for using at least 50% recycled material, plus safer manufacturing chemicals and labor practices.

Its low price point does come with a cost—though not an uncommon one. There’s no base included, so you’ll have to buy one separately.

Sunbrella Cantilever Patio Umbrella

Pros

  • Adjustable angle
  • Wheeled base included

Cons

  • Base can be cumbersome depending on how much space you have

With a distinctive design, a Sunbrella canopy, and an included wheeled weighted base, we highly recommend this cantilever patio umbrella. Because of the cantilever design, this umbrella positions directly over the desired area with the base offset, giving you extra space beneath the shade.

One of the best things about it is the built-in wheeled base, which you can fill with water and sand for extra stability. At 12 feet in diameter, the canopy offers substantial coverage and is adjustable, so you can angle it throughout the day to continuously block the sun head-on.

The patio umbrella is also available in nearly a dozen attractive colors and patterns.

9-Foot Round Outdoor Market Umbrella

Pros

  • Endless frame and canopy combinations
  • Natural teak frame stands out in comparison to other umbrellas

Cons

  • Wooden frame does not tilt

This patio umbrella is well designed in every sense—it's stylish and made with premium materials. While the price point is on the higher end of the umbrellas we tested, we can confidently say that with this option, you get what you pay for. It was one of our favorites for its customizability and solid bones.

It features a Sunbrella canopy, which provides excellent protection against UV rays, and a natural teak frame that stood out among the metal frames of the other models we tested. (However, if you like the sleek, modern look of metal, this umbrella is also available with an aluminum frame.)

Another plus is that it's available in a whopping 74 colors and patterns. Our gripe with this patio umbrella is the wooden frame doesn't tilt, which may be a dealbreaker for some. However, the aluminum frame options do have an auto-tilt function. It also doesn't come with a base.

That said, the wooden ribs, teak pole, and durable material make this an umbrella worth investing a few extra bucks into.

10-Foot Cantilever Umbrella With Base

Pros

  • Incredibly sturdy frame
  • Machine-washable canopy

Cons

  • Expensive in comparison to other options

If you're in the market for a square patio umbrella—great for a dining table of the same shape—this premium cantilever model is worth a look. It has a clean, modern look and a hefty, sturdy powder-coated frame.

Setup was a bit more arduous due to the umbrella's size and weight. It took time to fill the base and secure the canopy to the rest of the frame, but once it was up, we were confident that it could handle wind and rain without tipping or bowing.

The canopy fabric isn't Sunbrella, but it's made of thick marine-grade polyester designed to resist the effects of the sun, mildew, and dirt. Unlike any other patio umbrella we tested, this one features a machine-washable canopy—which we see as a huge bonus. Another plus is that this model comes with the base included, so the price you see is exactly the same as the final cost.

Hula Thatched Tiki Umbrella

Pros

  • Easy to open and close
  • Push-button tilt

Cons

  • Fringe may not last multiple seasons

We weren’t sure what to expect before we unboxed this festive patio umbrella. As it turned out, it was surprisingly well made, with a steel pole, fiberglass ribs, and a push-button tilt. There’s also a polyester canopy beneath the standard-issue plastic-fringe tiki “thatched” roof.

While we were initially worried the fringe would rip or tear under duress, after tugging on them and putting them through a mild stress test, they held up well.

It opens and closes without a hand crank, but it isn’t hard to set up or take down, and it took less than five minutes to do both. We also appreciated that it comes with a protective cover with a shoulder strap and drawstring closure.

Is this patio umbrella going to last more than a couple seasons? We expect it to if you keep it covered when not in use and don’t leave it out all winter. That said, the tropical vibe brings the beach to backyards all over the country.

9-Foot Solar Outdoor Umbrella

Pros

  • Solar-powered lights add atmosphere
  • Plenty of support from 8 iron ribs

While you might usually think of patio umbrellas as providing shade, we love this Blissun model for providing light, too. With solar-powered LED lights mounted on the sturdy set of iron ribs supporting the canopy, the umbrella easily transitions from blocking hot sun to setting the mood for breezy summer evenings. For even more style points, choose from 16 color options, including one striped pattern.

We’re not just pleased with this umbrella’s aesthetics, though. A push-button tilt function allows for easy angle adjustment, while the crank handle seamlessly opens the canopy. At 9 feet in diameter, we felt its size struck a good middle ground, offering reliable coverage (and a degree of UV protection) for at least a four-person seating area.

The downside is, unfortunately, a familiar one. Like many of the umbrellas we reviewed, this one does not have a base included.

15-Foot Patio Umbrella

Pros

  • Covers a wider space than other options
  • 12 sturdy steel ribs
  • Fabric is double-sided, UPF-rated, and PFAS-free

Cons

  • Base is not included
  • Cannot tilt umbrella angle

Most of the umbrellas we reviewed cover a square or round area of 12 feet, 10 feet, or even smaller. For larger patios—or if you have a long area or rectangular table to cover—we loved how this DomeShade patio umbrella provides maximum shade.

Its double-sided, domed rectangular canopy stretches over 15 x 9 feet. Its durable polyester material has a UPF 50+ rating, is waterproof and fade-resistant, and is manufactured without chemicals of concern like PFAS. 12 rust-proof steel ribs and a powder-coated central pole support all of this. A simple hand crank opens the umbrella, while a pair of buttons allow for height adjustments and 360-degree rotation.

You cannot, however, tilt the angle of the umbrella for additional coverage control. The umbrella also does not come with a base, which we found a bit frustrating at this slightly-higher price point.
