They’re in the forest, in your garden, even on your lawn. These little blobs can look like bright yellow aliens, whose thready networks keep stretching out to … somewhere.
In the lab, they’ve displayed astonishing prowess for getting through obstacles, including overcoming strong natural aversions to reach a goal. Yet, they can’t do much of anything on their own. It’s only when they join forces with others like themselves that their form of intelligence suddenly comes into being.
Does all this mean they’re conscious?
In the 1990s, a theory emerged called the Cellular Basis of Consciousness (CBC), which states that life and sentience are basically the same thing. According to the theory, “All living organisms are conscious, self-aware, and have valenced sensory and perceptual experiences.” CBC argues that unicellular prokaryotes—or the simplest form of unicellular life, such as common bacteria—engage in associative learning, stable memory formation, route navigation, and decision-making.
“They anticipate upcoming events and readily create functional social collectives, within which they display both cooperation and competition and, fascinatingly, a primitive form of altruism where some cells in a colony put themselves at risk to support the life functions of other cells in distress.”
The slime mold known as “the blob” is a prime example. It’s a colony of unicellular eukaryotes—or cells with nuclei—such as Physarum polycephalum, that can solve math problems and find its way out of a maze without chemical inducements like food. No brain required, just member cells that merge into a single cell mass containing multiple nuclei.
P. polycephalum demonstrated recently that it could “decide” to force itself through a blue light, which the species is strongly averse to. In nature it lives in dark places, consuming decomposing organic matter such as leaf litter and rotting logs. In this case though, it was starving and apparently very motivated to reach the food that lay just beyond the light. Researchers observed the slime mold using “rhythmic” wavelike contractions to move parts of its mass from one place to another, according to the July 2026 article published in the journal PRX Life.
Some bacteria work in a similar way, sensing when there are enough of them to take a collective action. One marine bioluminescent bacterium emits a molecule that stimulates glowing, but only when the bacteria have reached a certain population density. Princeton University molecular biologist Bonnie Lynn Bassler, PhD, says the way bacteria do this is through “talking, counting, and carrying out tasks in groups.”
The difference between what these unicellular beings experience as consciousness and what humans experience as consciousness, researchers say, is that their version of consciousness would feel to us like intuition, rather than a full experience of self.
