This Ridgid Shop Vac Marries Impressive Capacity and Fast Performance–All in a Surprisingly Compact Design
2026-05-02 · via Latest Content - Popular Mechanics

For years, Ridgid has maintained a strong reputation for making durable shop vacs that produce excellent suction. That’s why, in my experience, they’re so common on work sites (and why they’ve retained a permanent space in my shed). From ultra-portable 4-gallon shop vacs to rolling 16-gallon models that are big enough to handle any mess, Ridgid has a shop vac for everyone.

I became almost instantly attached to the Ridgid NXT HD1200, a 12-gallon model I recently tested for our guide to the best shop vacs. While it didn’t claim the title of Best Overall–that actually went to a smaller model, the Vacmaster Professional Wet/Dry Beast Series 5-Gallon Shop Vacuum–it was close. If not for a couple small gripes, this would unquestionably be in the mix for my current favorite shop vac. It hits such a sweet spot between weight, size, and capacity. It’s built to take a beating, has smartly designed attachments, and lives up the the brand’s reputation for producing great suction.

This shop vac passed my sawdust suction test faster than any other model.

A measure of any shop vac is its ability to vacuum up various types of materials both dry and wet. For that, the Ridgid performed as well as any 12-gallon model I’ve tested thanks to its 144 cubic feet per minute (CFM) suction and wide, 2-1/2-inch diameter hose.

In a series of timed, side-by-side tests with other shop vacs, I measured how long it took to vacuum up 12 cups of sawdust and drain a 2-gallon bucket of water. I also tested the NXT HD1200’s lift–its ability to pick up heavier objects–by using it to collect wood screws and larger bolts.

The NXT HD1200 excelled when it came to lighter material–it gobbled up the 12 cups of sawdust in just 15 seconds, the fastest of the bunch (even faster than our Best Suction pick, the DeWalt Stealthsonic Quiet 12-Gallon Wet/Dry Shop Vacuum). It took just under 5 seconds to empty the bucket of water (comparable to the DeWalt), and it also sucked up smaller wood screws with ease. The only thing the Ridgid struggled with were larger bolts. It was unable to pull those through the hose–a common problem with wider-hose shop vacs.

It weighs less than you’d expect considering its impressive capacity.

At 12 gallons, the Ridgid is large enough to clean up an entire garage or workshop post project without having to stop to empty the large collection bin. But there are plenty of other large capacity shop vacs out there. What earned this one our label of Best Large Capacity model is how light it is despite its impressive capacity.

At 22 pounds, you can take this shop vac up a flight or stairs without much trouble. It’s also designed surprisingly compactly, especially compared to the DeWalt Stealthsonic, which has the same capacity, and the on-board storage for the shop vac’s attachments (more on those in a minute) is second to none. It barely adds to the shop vac’s size, and it’s so helpful to have a place for everything on the shop vac itself.

Its collection of attachments is useful, and more importantly, they lock to the hose securely.

One of my biggest pet peeves with shop vacuums is when the accessories detach from the hose while you’re using them. Ridgid uses a locking mechanism that secures each attachment to the hose, as well as the hose to the vacuum base, and it works well. I didn’t experience any attachments or hoses pulling apart while stretching the hose to reach the deeper recesses of my car or even dragging the base behind me by the hose across the driveway.

The hose itself is 7 feet long, which is fairly standard for shop vacs this size. The Ridgid sits on casters that roll easily. With the smooth action of the wheels and locking attachments, I was able to move around my two car garage, pulling the base behind me by the hose with no issues.

In terms of the actual attachments, the floor tool has a broad opening, allowing it to pick up large amounts of lightweight material quickly. The crevice tool is small enough that I was able to fit into that gap between the center console and seats in my car. There’s also a shoe that fits over the floor tool for cleaning up spills, and two extension wands.

Final Thoughts

A shop vac is an essential tool in any active workshop, but few people want to spend a lot of money on a tool that’s designed for cleaning up. We prefer to invest in powerful table saws, nimble orbital sanders, or kick-ass tool sets.

But the Ridgid 12-gallon shop vac is worth your investment. Its excellent suction and smart hose-and-attachment locking mechanism eliminate a lot of the trouble you find with lesser shop vacs. At 12 gallons, it has enough capacity for bigger clean-ups, yet it’s still small enough to find an out of the way place to live in a crowded workshop when it’s not in use.
