REI’s Anniversary Sale starts today, May 15, and runs through the official kick-off to summer, aka Memorial Day Weekend. The outdoor outfitter’s sale section practically takes up the entire site, with at least 25 percent off reliable brands like Coleman, Igloo, REI Co-op, and many more. There are sales on everything you need to hit the trails or campgrounds and enjoy the great outdoors.
REI Co-op members have it even better—there are member-exclusive deals and discount codes for REI’s most loyal customers. Now might be a good time to spend an extra $30 on the one-time charge that gets you membership for life, but whether you’re a member or not, there are plenty of deals to be had.
We’ll take you through some of our test categories, such as camp chairs, tents, and other camping essentials. We’ll be updating the list as more discounted items become available throughout the week.
When Maggie Slepian tested a bunch of different family tents for us, she looked for ones that had plenty of space and were easy to pitch. She noted that REI Co-op's new Westward tents are excellent for campers seeking extra space in the great outdoors. Customize the setup with the line’s multiple tent sizes, shelter style options, tarps, chairs, and car-camping mattresses. Pitching the Westward is easy thanks to color-coded poles and hubs, so even novice campers won’t have any hiccups.
For those new to camping, this full kit from Kelty gives you everything you need for under $200. It includes a 4-person tent, two sleeping bags, and two sleeping pads.
When it comes to sitting, we’ve done the legwork for you. Reviews Editor Tom Price is constantly testing camp chairs and folding chairs, from Coleman to Yeti to REI Co-op. He looks for portability, durability, and comfort above all. His recent favorite pickup is the Westward Padded folding chair.
“The Westward Padded folding chair does more for my seated joy than nearly all others I've tested,” says Price. “The padding is subtle, yet makes a genuine difference in comparison to even the springiest non-padded choices.” The chair also comes with extra niceties like a hidden cup holder that rotates out when you actually need it, and comfortable backpack straps for toting.
Helinox is also a PopMech Editors’ favorite because they’re supremely lightweight, easy to pack, and can be attached to your daypack. The Chair Zero LT weighs just over a pound with a 285-pound weight limit. Its pack-down length of just 14 inches means it won’t take up space in your duffel bag.
A bunch of coolers and portable refrigerators are also camping accouterments up for grabs. Dometic is a best-selling name in the latter category for its reliability and ease of use, and they’re all almost 20 percent off during the sale. All they need is a solar-powered generator, and they’re good to go.
Another must-have is a decent water bottle. Hydro Flask offers excellent insulated, durable options that keep water cold and protect against drops and dings. Swap out the caps for a customized sip. Just remember to drink even if you’re not thirsty—heat stroke is real.
While we recommend lightweight hiking shoes for serious trails during the summer, a pair of trail sandals are perfect for kicking around the campsite. They double as water shoes if your hike includes dipping into a lake or creek, and the closed-toe options, like the Keen Hyperport, keep your toes protected. They have a grippy outsole to grip smooth rock faces, and a bungee cord for a snug fit. The quick-drying fabric is durable, yet comfortable against your skin and won’t cause blisters or hotspots.
