We can’t stress enough how far a good flashlight can go. In testing pocket flashlights, rechargeable flashlights, handheld spotlights, and even headlamps, we’ve gathered a lot of experience (and opinions) on what makes for a reliable flashlight. One brand that constantly gets high marks from us is Olight. Olight makes versatile flashlights with excellent light output—measured in lumens—and sleek, durable designs.
For years, we’ve recommended the ArcPro Ultra as the most versatile flashlight, but the brand’s newest offering may take its place. This week, Olight released the BatonUltra flashlight, an excellent EDC light that’s perfect for your home or camping.
Olight created its own proprietary LED (light-emitting diode), which reportedly achieves 10% luminous efficiency at high power, meaning you’re getting a brighter light without the LED overheating and becoming less efficient (less bright). Test Editor Brad Ford explains that lumen count is generally overhyped because it doesn’t account for an LED inevitably heating up at max output. However, Olight has done the work here to ensure you get a bright light even when set to high.
Aside from the nitty-gritty of LED efficiency and brightness, the BatonUltra has everything we’ve come to know and love from Olight. The BatonUltra has the same intuitive dial control as the ArkPro and offers multiple light and laser settings that can be used separately or simultaneously. Power the flashlight using either the side or tail switch located on the bottom for versatile handling. The tail is also magnetic, allowing it to attach to the hood of a car or the side of a metal workbench for hands-free use.
Another proprietary win for Olight is its trademarked O-Aluminum material: a scratch-resistant metal that’s strong yet lightweight. The grooved body offers great grip, and a deep-carry pocket clip can be fixed onto a backpack or tool bag. Recharge the BatonUltra using the included magnetic charger or simply grab one of the many USB-C cords you probably have lying around.
The release of Olight’s BatonUltra perfectly coincides with the spring camping season and looks ahead to summer hiking trips, though we expect you’ll keep it on you well past that. Its compact design, lightweight build, and excellent LED make it a serious contender to be a new favorite in the lineup.
