Its 10-inch pneumatic tires are great at absorbing bumps in the road, and it folds easily for storage. The tires are “self-sealing,” meaning an interior liner will automatically fill in punctures for a short-term patch. It’s not a permanent solution, but even if you roll over a nail or sharp rock, you’ll be able to continue driving without stopping for an immediate replacement. At just over 40 pounds, this Ninebot is heavier than some commuter scooters. But some of that comes from the bigger battery for extended range.

While 40 miles won’t take you on long-range adventures, it should last for multiple weeks of scootering around town. The Ninebot is the second most expensive of the scooters we recommend. But considering how well-rounded this e-scooter is, it’s the best for most people.

The GoTrax XR Elite needs to be on your radar if you’re looking for an electric scooter that doesn’t take a bite out of your wallet. At just 32 pounds, it’s one of the lightest and easiest to carry among the scooters here. This is further amplified by the foldable design and slender frame.

This scooter has an estimated range of 16 miles, a top speed of about 15 miles per hour, and a max incline of 15 degrees. What really sets it apart from the others is the affordable price given the quality performance. This costs about $400 less than the Segway Ninebot Kickscooter Max.

While the XR Elite isn’t built for long distances or top speeds, it’s a perfect choice for puttering around town. Moreover, its battery charges in just four hours, allowing you to get around sooner if need be.

When testing this scooter, I took it from Central Park all the way back to my apartment in Brooklyn. I had my backpack, which weighed over 20 pounds, in the basket, and I sat on the seat for the majority of the trip.

What I noticed immediately was the zip of the motor as I got close to 20 miles per hour on straightaways and churned up the incline of the Queensboro Bridge without losing momentum. I also have to admit that I loved the seat. Instead of standing for over 30 minutes on the ride back, I could rest a bit more while still making better time than I would on the subway.

The throttle is responsive, and the larger 14-inch wheels stood up well to the potholes on the streets and cracks on the pavement. While its size prevents it from being an easy storage item in a closet—even though it folds—this electric scooter comes with the power, comfort, and convenience for quick grocery trips and long city commutes alike.

Very few electric scooters offer the balance of affordability and performance that the Gotrax G3 Max does. With a maximum range of 37 miles, the scooter is ideal for daily commuting back and forth to work without the constant need to recharge.

Beyond this, the scooter is equipped with a number of features that caught our eye, including the integrated number lock on the body that dissuades thieves by preventing them from actually being able to unfold and ride the scooter without the right code.

The G3 Max also comes with an LED display showing your speed, speed modes, mileage, and battery life. There’s an LED headlight for riding at night too.

Furthermore, the electric scooter is a relatively quick charge, going from zero to fully charged in 7 hours. This means you can plug it in overnight and ride out in the morning on a full charge with no worry. Alongside an LED headlight, the scooter comes with lighting underneath the board so you’ll have full visibility at night.

The headlight and under-board lighting are paired with real turn signals as well, so you don’t have to take your hands of the handles to let drivers around you know which direction you’re headed.

The GXL V2 is a solid choice if you’re after a scooter that’s comfortable to carry. It won’t exactly fit into a backpack, but it’s small and lightweight enough to pick up and take with you on the train or store in a closet in your apartment.

Despite the small size, the GXL V2 boasts a number of key features, including a headlight, an LED display, and a durable aluminum frame. The tires are solid rubber, and so will never run flat.

The key downsides to the GXL V2 are its small motor and battery. The speed tops out at just over 15 miles per hour, while the battery will get you only 12 miles of range before it needs a recharge.

For teens or nostalgic riders that want a fun ride at an accessible price, Razor has a number of electric scooters that fit the bill. The E200 provides a sturdy motor and a decent range in a design reminiscent of the same old Razor scooters we used to ride around on as kids.

While it won’t be enough to use for any real distance, the scooter is great as a fun way to spend afternoons riding around the park or your local neighborhood.

It’s worth noting that this is really only a recreational scooter. You shouldn’t expect any miracles when it comes to driving up a steep grade or for extending anywhere beyond the 8-mile listed range.

This level of power on the deep-tread tires means you can go beyond roads and streets. The scooter handles gravel, dirt, hills, and more with no issue. In fact, it even comes with a Boost mode to max out the acceleration for quick starts or getting your scooter out and over obstacles.

This power and range come at a cost though, with the price well surpassing the other scooters here. That’s to be expected, since no other scooter is capable of more.
