According to a preprint study led by researchers at the University of Tübingen’s Autonomous Vision Group, today’s self-driving cars may be passing tests with flying colors, but those tests are way too predictable. This leads to those cars failing real-world tests because they were entirely unprepared for the unexpected.

The good news? There’s a new test that is trying to solve this problem.

The Fail2Drive project puts driverless cars in weird, sometimes absurd situations to test how they would react. One of those tests involved how it would react to an elephant crossing the street. Another tested how a driverless car would react to a playground slide suddenly blocking traffic. Yet another brought in some cartoon logic by presenting the car with a painted wall designed to trick it into thinking the road kept going, a test Wile E. Coyote likely failed miserably.

The results generally do not instill confidence in the current state of the technology. The vehicles often hesitated or entirely miscalculated the obstacles before them, sometimes plowing straight into them even though they could’ve easily avoided them.

As lead researcher Andreas Geiger explained in a LinkedIn post, the problem isn’t that the cars don’t know how to drive well; it’s that they were trained well. Many autonomous systems are evaluated on datasets that mirror their training environments. Train them poorly, and they will drive poorly. If you don’t train them to expect the unexpected, they’ll plow straight through the unexpected.

Fail2Drive calls its weird-o but ultimately quite useful tests “out-of-distribution” scenarios, which they then upload to an automotive research simulator called CARLA that simulates them in video game-y 3D environments. Meaning, you can actually watch the hysterical footage of these failed simulations.

On average, performance dropped by 22.8 percent when autonomous cars were exposed to unfamiliar conditions, which the researchers described as “fundamental robustness concerns.”

Autonomous vehicles have cropped up in the news quite often in the past year, from getting people and animals killed to blowing straight through stop signs in school zones. Their real-world readiness has been thrown into question, and yet autonomous vehicle companies continue to expand despite the obvious safety issues.

They could just be a matter of cars failing because they were not trained to account for the randomness and chaos of real life, which raises the question of whether they will ever truly be able to.
