[May 17, CGTN Japanese] According to the first "Global Trends in Higher Education Report" released by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on May 12, the number of higher education enrollments worldwide has more than doubled over the past 20-plus years.
Based on the latest data from 146 countries, this report shows that global higher education enrollments increased from approximately 100 million in 2000 to 269 million in 2024, accounting for about 43% of the higher education-age population. Meanwhile, clear regional disparities were observed: the higher education enrollment rate for young people in Western Europe and North America has risen to about 80%, while the rate in Latin America and the Caribbean is 59%, in South and West Asia 30%, and in sub-Saharan Africa only 9%.
The number of students receiving higher education abroad increased from 2.1 million in 2000 to approximately 7.3 million in 2023. Seven countries—the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Canada, Russia, and France—account for half of the world's international students. (c)CGTN Japanese/AFPBB News
