Russia’s major mobile carriers have begun warning users that their official company apps may not work properly when a VPN is active, RIA Novosti reported on April 14.
MTS tells users: “VPN is enabled. Data may not display.” MegaFon advises: “Turn off your VPN so everything works properly in the app.” Beeline also recommends disabling VPN, saying the app works better without it.
The MTS and MegaFon apps continue to function normally with a VPN enabled, the independent Russian TV channel TV Rain wrote.
Earlier on April 14, major Russian services began restricting functionality for users with VPNs active. Some Russians found that Yandex, VK, Ozon, online marketplaces, and banking apps had stopped working.
Russia’s Digital Development Ministry had previously ordered major Russian internet platforms to restrict access to their services for VPN users by April 15, threatening to remove any non-compliant services from “white lists” — the list of sites and apps that remain accessible when internet access is cut off.
