Pussy Riot has been added to the list of “terrorists and extremists” maintained by Russia’s Federal Financial Monitoring Service. The independent Russian news outlet Vot Tak was among the first to notice the change.
A Moscow court declared the group an “extremist” organization in December 2025 at the request of Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office.
The case was heard behind closed doors. A prosecutor told the court, according to the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, that the lawsuit had been filed because the group’s actions posed a threat to state security.
Pussy Riot is known for its political activism, including against the Russian authorities and Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. One of Pussy Riot’s most recent actions took place in early May on the eve of the opening of the Russian pavilion at the Venice Biennale. The artists carried it out jointly with the Ukrainian group Femen.
