Potentially millions of Australians have woken up to no reception as major mobile network operator (MNO) Vodafone investigates a major outage.

Vodafone urgently investigating outage impacting millions of Aussies

In a statement seen by media, the mobile service provider confirmed that it was aware of the incident and that it was investigating.

“We are aware that some customers are experiencing intermittent issues with Vodafone service, and we are urgently investigating,” the statement said.

“We apologise for the inconvenience and are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. We will provide an update as soon as possible.

“We recommend customers to power cycle their device to restore services.”

Vodafone has 275 million direct mobile customers worldwide, 5.4 million of which are in Australia, making it the nation’s third-largest telco. As a result, as many as one in five Australians are without mobile service.

Vodafone customers from around the country took to social media to express their frustration and confusion at the outages.

“Anyone else with Vodafone got no reception? My NBN works with Vodafone, just no service,” said one Facebook user in a NSW Central Coast group.

Another user said: “Is your Vodafone working in Sydney? My phone says ‘no service’. I can’t call or receive calls …”

Outages reportedly peaked at 9:05am, with Downdetector listing 8,248 reports.

However, at the time of writing, the latest report numbers are down to 1,498.

On its website, Vodafone has suggested that its service is largely restored, and has requested that anyone still having issues power cycle their device.

“Some customers experienced mobile network issues this morning. Most services are now restored, with the rest coming back online. If you’re still affected, try restarting your device,” the site said.

Cyber Daily has noted that the outages have fluctuated throughout the morning, with connection coming back intermittently and then returning to “SOS” mode. Power cycling has not guaranteed restored service.
