The International Cybersecurity Challenge (ICC) has taken place on the Gold Coast, with Team Europe claiming the winning spot for the fifth year in a row.

EU wins global cyber security competition following digital partnership with Australia

The challenge, which first took place in Athens in 2022, seeks to develop cyber security skills and awareness for the more than 65 participating countries.

The European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) coached the winning Team Europe, saying that its dedicated approach to the highest level of cyber security awareness and response marks an important point in workforce and security advancement.

“The unfailing success of Team Europe gives us hope for the future. Indeed, our cyber security resilience can only grow if we plant the right cyber security mindset today,” said ENISA executive director Juhan Lepassaar.

“Providing our young talents with both incentives as well as tough problems is key to the development of the workforce of the future.”

The competition follows the signing of a Europe and Australia Security and Defence Partnership that seeks to strengthen collaboration and resilience in cyber space, among maritime and emerging technological threats.

“Cyber security is a core pillar of our shared security and of the new EU-Australia Security and Defence Partnership,” said EU ambassador to Australia, Gabriele Visentin.

“As global threats evolve, cooperation between like-minded partners is increasingly essential to protect and strengthen the resilience and security of the functioning of our democracies.

“Through participation in practical, accessible activities like the ICC, the European Union is strengthening ties, supporting young talent, and deepening partnerships with Australia and across the Indo-Pacific.”

Teams from around the world engaged in a range of activities, with a primary goal of ensuring that nations are prepared and aware of the growing threat of cyber security risks, while building international collaboration and cooperation.

Activities within the competition included real-world simulations and challenges where participants were required to defend/attack digital vulnerabilities.

“The victory of Team Europe showed us that great results can be achieved when working together,” said European Cybersecurity Competence Centre (ECCC) executive director Luca Tagliaretti.

“The strength of our team lies in the exceptional talent of our players, their commitment, but most of all in their ability to complement each other and be together as one.”
