An adaption of the Japanese short story “Barn Burning,” this South Korean thriller lives up to its name. Focusing on a young writer, his childhood friend, and a stranger (played by Steve Yuen) they make friends with, Burning starts off as a very unassuming drama that touches on contemporary South Korean society. As the film progresses and our protagonist learns a bit more about the stranger, the narrative starts to change when he realizes things may not be what they seem.

Burning may not be for everyone, as it does spend a lot of its runtime focusing on the mundane daily life of its characters. But while it does take a while to get to the thrills, the film rewards patient audiences with a nerve wracking third act.

The concept of an android not knowing it’s an android and someone interacting with it is nothing new.
