Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, Debolal Gorlosa, on Monday, May 11 launched a sharp political attack on the National People’s Party (NPP) and its candidate Daniel Langthasa, alleging that the party functioned as the BJP’s “B-team” during the 2026 elections.

Addressing the media during the Platinum Jubilee celebration programme of the council, Gorlosa said earlier allegations made by the Congress against the NPP had now “been proven true.”

He alleged that Daniel Langthasa’s candidature in the 2026 elections was part of a strategic political move aimed at dividing votes and securing an electoral advantage for the BJP.

According to Gorlosa, since the NPP is a constituent of the NDA alliance, discussions were held with the Chief Minister of Meghalaya before Daniel Langthasa was fielded as an NPP candidate from the Haflong constituency. He claimed that the move formed part of a broader electoral strategy adopted by the BJP.

The NCHAC chief further stated that if the Congress and the NPP had contested the elections jointly, the contest would have been significantly tougher for the BJP and the party’s victory margin would likely have been narrower.

Gorlosa said the public had now become aware of such political strategies and appealed to people to support development, stability and the interests of the region.

His remarks triggered political discussion across the district during the council’s 75th Foundation Day celebrations.

Meanwhile, the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council were held with colourful cultural programmes at the NCHAC Secretariat playground on Monday.

Extending greetings to the people of the district, Gorlosa stressed the importance of maintaining peace and communal harmony in the region. He expressed gratitude to all communities and individuals for their contribution towards preserving social harmony.

The CEM also highlighted ongoing efforts to document traditional customs and customary laws of tribal communities, which are being preserved in the Council’s Customary Court Library.

Remembering the contributions of historical figures including Raja Govinda Chandra, Senapati Tularam and Rani Gaidinliu, Gorlosa said preserving cultural heritage remained a matter of responsibility and pride for him over the past nine years.

On the development front, he emphasised the need to improve regional connectivity and congratulated students from the district for securing top positions in the Assam High School Leaving Certificate Examination.

Gorlosa further stated that the long-standing salary crisis within the council had been largely resolved and urged employees and teachers to continue performing their duties with dedication.

As part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, the council released Class II textbooks for Dimasa medium lower primary schools, presented the “Best Village Award” under the Dara Disa Scheme 2025 to Dimaino-1 and Amlongbra villages, and announced an increase in the honorarium of village headmen to Rs 5,000.

The programme was attended by Rupali Langthasa, Padma Shri awardees Joynacharan Bathari and Ramkuwangbe Jeme Newme, along with executive members, council members, secretaries, former council members, village headmen and other dignitaries.
