Assam: Villagers allege fund misutilisation and poor execution in Nagaon MGNREGA works
Allegations of irregularities in the implementation of MGNREGA works have been raised against officials and representatives of Singia Gaon Panchayat under the Juria Development Block in Assam’s Nagaon district.
Local residents have alleged that several development works undertaken under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) have been executed with procedural lapses and poor-quality implementation, particularly during the 2024–25 financial year.
Attention has been drawn to an agricultural embankment project in Ward No. 5 of the panchayat, which connects East Singaria Mosque to Baniya Bidal. Villagers have alleged that the quality and extent of work carried out on the ground do not match the sanctioned estimates, raising concerns over the utilisation of public funds.
It has been alleged that the panchayat’s GRS, Abdullah Faruqi, and Assistant Engineer, Biswajit Das, were involved in the execution and supervision of the works. Certain local representatives have also been accused by residents of colluding in the alleged irregularities.
Villagers further alleged that project signboards were installed in violation of prescribed norms and that only minimal work was executed despite the release of funds under the scheme.
Residents have urged the State Panchayat and Rural Development Minister, Atul Bora, to order a thorough inquiry into the allegations and take appropriate action against those found responsible.
