AIUDF leader Rafiqul Islam on April 29 said exit polls should not be treated as final results and urged people to wait until May 4 for the official outcome of the Assembly elections.

Reacting to various exit poll projections, Islam said such surveys are based on the opinions of only a limited number of people and may not always accurately reflect the final mandate.

“Exit polls are not exact polls. We will have to wait till the 4th for the actual results. Sometimes they are absolutely correct, sometimes they are completely opposite,” he said.

He added that he neither fully accepts nor completely rejects the projections released on Wednesday.

Speaking on Assam, the AIUDF leader said he expects a close contest between the NDA and the opposition bloc.

Regarding his own party’s prospects, Islam said the All India United Democratic Front is likely to win around 12 seats in the state.

Commenting on West Bengal, he said most exit polls projecting an NDA majority there may not prove accurate.

He expressed confidence that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would return to power in the state.

The final results of the Assembly elections will be declared after counting of votes on May 4.
