A two-day Agriculture and Biochar Preparation Training Camp was organised at Powaimukh Janajati ME School in Margherita under Assam's Tinsukia district on June 28 and 29 to promote sustainable farming practices and improve soil health.
 

The training programme was organised by Sustainable Organic Initiatives for Livelihoods (SOIL), a non-governmental organisation working to encourage environmentally friendly agricultural practices. The initiative aimed to provide farmers and self-help group members with basic knowledge on improving soil health, enhancing soil carbon, naturally boosting crop yields, and ensuring a more sustainable future for agriculture.
 

Renowned agricultural expert Samir Bordoloi, an Ashoka Fellow and Agricultural Extension Consultant with the United Nations, attended the programme as the resource person and keynote speaker. He spoke about the importance of biochar in restoring soil fertility, increasing agricultural productivity, and promoting climate-resilient farming through sustainable methods.
 

The programme was attended by SOIL members Protim Hazarika, Arup Jyoti Gogoi, Jiten Gogoi, and Dipak Borgohain, along with members of various self-help groups from the Powaimukh area. Participants also received practical training on biochar preparation and its application in farming.
 

The organisers said such awareness programmes are essential to encourage farmers to adopt sustainable agricultural practices that improve productivity while conserving the environment.
