At least five houses were reportedly damaged in a fire at Kharam Vaiphei village in Manipur's Kangpokpi district on May 30, prompting demands from Kuki organisations for an investigation into the incident and the circumstances surrounding it.

According to local sources, the incident occurred at around 2.15 pm in the village located near the Leimakhong area. Reports from the area alleged that unidentified armed persons were involved in the attack, during which several houses were set ablaze.

No casualties were immediately reported.

The incident took place on a day when Kuki-Zo organisations were holding rallies in different locations, including Kangpokpi, to press for justice in the killing of three church leaders and the release of 14 individuals reportedly being held hostage.

Following the incident, community organisations expressed concern over the security situation in the area and called for appropriate action by the authorities.

In a statement, Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) condemned the burning of houses at Kharam Vaiphei village and urged the government and security agencies to conduct a fair investigation, identify those responsible and take necessary action.

The organisation said efforts should be made to prevent further escalation of tensions and ensure the safety of civilians living in vulnerable areas.

KIM also reiterated its appeal for peace and coexistence among communities while emphasising the need for protection of lives and property.

Meanwhile, the Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO), South West Sadar Hills Block, also expressed concern over the incident and sought clarification on the circumstances under which the houses were damaged.

The student body urged authorities to strengthen security measures, ensure the safety of residents and take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Officials had not issued a detailed statement on the incident till late Saturday evening. Further information is awaited.
