The Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) has demanded the unconditional release of its office bearers who were detained by police during a protest demonstration held in front of the Chief Minister’s Bungalow on May 23 over the ongoing conflict situation in Manipur.

Addressing a press conference at Congress Bhavan on Friday evening, MPYC vice president Thingujam Kiran Singh said the Youth Congress had organised the protest to raise concerns over the prolonged crisis in the state.

He alleged that several office bearers, including the president of the Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress, were detained during the protest and had not been released till evening.

“The concerned authorities should release them immediately without any condition,” Singh said.

He further alleged that Manipur has continued to face conflict for nearly three years, leading to the deaths, displacement and disappearance of many innocent people.

Singh claimed that despite the presence of a “double-engine government”, authorities had failed to bring a permanent solution to the crisis.

“Innocent people continue to die. Many cases related to the crisis have been handed over to the NIA, but no visible arrests have been made,” he alleged.

He further accused the government of focusing more on election-related activities instead of addressing the conflict situation and restoring peace.

The MPYC leader said public anger over the handling of the Manipur crisis had led to Friday’s protest and reiterated the demand for the unconditional release of detained party members at the earliest.
