A day after violent clashes in Assam’s Chirang district, Divisional Forest Officer Kunjan Basumatary made a sensational claim, alleging the involvement of an organised criminal network behind the attack on forest personnel.

According to the DFO, the attackers looted a firearm and a significant quantity of ammunition during the incident. He further alleged that several weapons belonging to the Forest Department were damaged or destroyed by the mob.

Basumatary also raised concerns over what he described as a delayed response from the police, claiming that timely assistance was not received despite the severity of the situation.

The incident has heightened tensions in the district, with authorities closely monitoring the law and order situation. 

Further investigation is underway to identify those involved and assess the extent of the damage caused during the violence.

Meanwhile, the Government of Assam has suspended mobile internet and data services in Chirang and Kokrajhar districts following violent clashes triggered by an eviction drive along the India–Bhutan border.

According to an official notification issued by Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Tewari, the decision was taken after reports of unrest in Chirang district, where forest officials detained 25 Adivasi individuals during an eviction operation at Runikhata on April 16.

The situation escalated into violent clashes between protesters and forest personnel, with reports of government vehicles being set on fire and attempts made to torch the Range Officer’s office. Incidents of firing and continued tension were also reported.

Authorities expressed concern that the unrest could spread to adjoining areas, including Kokrajhar district, posing a threat to public safety and law and order.
