The Manipur government on Thursday, April 23 observed Khongjom Day under heightened security across Thoubal district, commemorating the sacrifice of Manipuri soldiers who fought against British colonial forces in 1891.

The main observance was held at the Khongjom War Memorial Complex at Khebaching Khongjom, where Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla led the ceremony. Chief Minister, Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, senior civil and police officials were present at the event.

The programme began with the laying of floral wreaths at the Khongjom War Memorial, followed by ceremonial honours including Guard of Honour, General Salute, Reverse Arms, sounding of the Last Post, two minutes’ silence, Slope Arms and Order Arms.

As part of the tribute, floral wreaths were also laid at the statue of Paona Brajabashi, accompanied by a gun salute. Traditional tarpon rituals were performed at the Khongjom River in remembrance of the fallen soldiers.

Khongjom Day marks the historic Battle of Khongjom, which represented the final stand of the erstwhile Manipuri kingdom during the Anglo-Manipur War.

Authorities had deployed extensive security arrangements along routes leading to Thoubal district and the memorial site to ensure the smooth conduct of the observance.

The annual commemoration serves as a reminder of the valour and sacrifice of Manipuri soldiers and holds significant historical and cultural importance in the state.
