Protests demanding the safe release of six remaining Naga civilians allegedly being held hostage in Manipur grew stronger on May 16 as several civil society organisations and indigenous groups joined an ongoing demonstration at Kanglatongbi in Kangpokpi district.

The protest, organised by the Koubru Range Liangmai Women’s Union, entered its fourth day amid continuing tension following the May 13 violence in Kangpokpi district.

Several organisations, including the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, International Peace and Social Advancement and Indigenous People’s Forum Manipur, extended support to the agitation.

Protesters raised slogans against violence and abduction, carrying placards reading “Say No to Abduction and Violence”, “Hostages are Human, Not Weapons” and “Where is Our Government?”

According to organisers, 20 Naga civilians were allegedly abducted from Leilon Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district following the ambush incident on May 13 in which three church leaders were killed. While several individuals have reportedly been released, six persons are still said to be in captivity.

A protester said families of the missing persons remain anxious as repeated appeals for their safe release have not yet yielded results.

“The government should ensure the safety and secure release of the remaining civilians. We want both the state and Central governments to intervene immediately,” she said.

Speaking at the protest site, IPSA president Khuraijam Athouba said Manipur has been facing a difficult situation for the past three years and expressed concern over continued violence and insecurity.

He condemned the alleged abduction of civilians and urged authorities to take stronger steps to restore law and order.

The protests come amid heightened tensions in parts of Manipur following recent incidents of violence in Kangpokpi and Noney districts.
