Residents of several localities in Sribhumi, Assam staged a road blockade protest on Monday, May 25 against recurring artificial flooding in the town following continuous rainfall.
The protesters, including local women and men, raised slogans against the Sribhumi Municipal Board and Member of Parliament Kripanath Mallah, alleging prolonged administrative negligence in addressing the persistent waterlogging problem.
According to residents, almost every road in the Sribhumi town area experiences severe artificial flooding after heavy rainfall each year, resulting in major inconvenience and frequent accidents. Brajendra Road was reported to be among the worst affected areas, with large portions of the road submerged under water during the recent spell of rain.
Residents from Brajendra Road, Babyland Road, and Nilmoni Road joined the protest and blocked roads in the affected areas. Protesters alleged that no public representative or official had visited them despite the worsening situation.
They further claimed that political leaders seek public support during elections even in difficult conditions but fail to respond during times of crisis. Residents stated that they incur heavy losses every year due to flooding and waterlogging.
The protesters demanded a permanent and effective solution to the recurring artificial flooding problem and warned that their agitation would continue if immediate corrective measures are not taken by the authorities.
