Assam: Kushiyara river erosion endangers historic temple, displaces families in Sribhumi

A historic temple in Assam’s Sribhumi district has come under severe threat due to the advancing erosion of the Kushiyara River, triggering panic among residents of the affected area.

The historic Lalbaba Temple, situated in the Bhanga Bazar locality, is facing an imminent danger of being washed away as the river continues its aggressive course during the onset of the monsoon season. Several houses in the area have already been swallowed by the river, leaving multiple families homeless. Many of the displaced residents have reportedly taken shelter within the temple premises.

Local residents alleged that despite repeated appeals and complaints to the concerned departmental authorities, no effective erosion-control measures have been undertaken so far. They accused the authorities of negligence at a time when the situation continues to worsen with each passing day.

Newly elected MLA Zakaria Ahmed visited the erosion-hit area to assess the ground situation and interact with affected residents. The visit comes amid growing concern over the safety of the historic temple and nearby settlements.

Residents said fear and uncertainty have gripped the locality as the Kushiyara River steadily erodes the riverbank. Temple authorities and local people have appealed to the Assam Chief Minister to immediately intervene and take urgent steps to protect the Lalbaba Temple and nearby habitations from further erosion.
