Strong public reactions and widespread appeals are emerging across Arunachal Pradesh following the arrest of prominent anti-drug activist Gumin Mize by Assam Police in connection with a case registered at Bihpuria Police Station.

Mize, who serves as the president of the voluntary organisation Arunachal Pradesh Anti-Drugs Warriors (APADW), is widely known across the state for his grassroots campaign against drug abuse, youth rehabilitation initiatives, and anti-narcotics awareness drives.

Originally from East Siang district, Gumin Mize has built a strong public image through his active involvement in identifying alleged drug peddlers, helping families affected by addiction, and assisting youths in rehabilitation efforts across districts including Itanagar, Siang, and Lower Subansiri.

The controversy erupted after Mize was arrested by Bihpuria Police of Assam from Itanagar earlier this month. Police reportedly booked him under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act following an incident in Bihpuria where gunshots were allegedly fired.

According to police sources, the case involves allegations of unlawful use of firearms. However, Mize’s legal counsel and supporters have strongly defended him, claiming that the firing involved legally licensed ammunition used purely in self-defense during an altercation.

The arrest has triggered anger and emotional reactions among several sections of society in Arunachal Pradesh, with many alleging that the case may have been influenced by powerful drug syndicates threatened by Mize’s anti-drug activities.

Supporters and social organisations claim that his continuous crackdown on drug abuse and alleged traffickers in the region had made him a target of vested interests linked to narcotics networks operating across state borders.

Social activist Amma Bagbi termed the arrest “most unfortunate” and described it as a matter linked to the larger issue of drug mafia influence. Speaking about Mize’s work, she said she had personally witnessed the anti-drug welfare activities being carried out by him and his organisation in Itanagar.

Bagbi stated that several parents regularly visit the APADW office seeking help to rescue their children from drug addiction, and that Mize has been actively involved in sending affected youths to rehabilitation centres and counselling families.

The incident has now sparked growing demands from citizens, youth groups, and civil society organisations seeking a fair investigation and the immediate release of Gumin Mize. Supporters continue to maintain that his contributions towards combating drug abuse in Arunachal Pradesh should be taken into consideration during the legal process.

Meanwhile, authorities have stated that the investigation into the case is ongoing.
