Northeast India International Runway Week 2026 opened with a packed schedule at Vivanta Guwahati, bringing together more than 30 designers and over 80 models in what organisers describe as a major push to position the region within India’s wider fashion industry.

The three-day event is designed as a platform to connect designers from the Northeast with national and international markets. It features a mix of established names and new entrants, alongside celebrity appearances and industry professionals.

The showcase is curated and directed by Dipankar Kashyap, who has worked in the regional fashion sector for over three decades. Organisers say the event aims to function as a long-term platform rather than a one-off showcase.

Day one opened with a presentation by Zubeen’s Collection, setting the tone with designs rooted in regional identity while incorporating contemporary elements. Designers, including Papli Gogoi, Sangeeta Chowdhury, Jeuti Das Banikya, Jasmin Pegu and Alok Agarwal followed with collections focused on craftsmanship and modern styling. The evening closed with a finale by Abigail H Zhome.

A curated mix of established and emerging models formed part of the opening day, with organisers emphasising auditions as a route to identify new talent. The approach is intended to expand opportunities for participants while maintaining industry standards.

The event has drawn attention beyond the region, with the presence of Asif Merchant and Rohit Khandelwal among those attending.

Organised by Divine Events and led by Shasanka Das, the platform is positioned as an effort to build a recognisable fashion identity for the Northeast.

Two days of shows remain, with organisers expecting continued participation from designers and industry stakeholders as the event progresses.
