Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 13 reiterated the Assam government’s commitment to implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), stating that the proposal remains a key part of the BJP’s election manifesto.

Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, the Chief Minister said the government would work towards implementing every promise mentioned in its poll document.

“UCC is a part of our election manifesto. So, every point, not only UCC, whatever we have mentioned in our election manifesto, we’ll try 100 per cent to implement each and every word we have mentioned in the manifesto, including UCC,” Sarma said.

The statement comes shortly after the BJP-led NDA returned to power in Assam for a second consecutive term with a massive mandate in the 2026 Assembly elections.

The Uniform Civil Code has remained one of the BJP’s major ideological commitments nationally, with the party advocating a common set of civil laws governing matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption for all citizens irrespective of religion.

Assam has already witnessed several legal and administrative reforms under the Himanta Biswa Sarma government relating to marriage registration, child marriage laws, and population-linked policy discussions, which political observers see as part of a broader push towards legal uniformity and social reform.

However, the issue continues to remain politically sensitive, with opposition parties and minority organisations often expressing concerns over its implications for cultural and religious diversity.
