AIUDF alleges Assam UCC move aimed at ‘Hindu-Muslim Division’, vows strong opposition
Rafiqul Islam, on May 19, criticised the Assam government’s decision to introduce a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), alleging that the move was aimed at creating division between Hindus and Muslims.
Reacting to the decision taken during the first Cabinet meeting of the new government, the AIUDF leader said the government should instead focus on issues such as rising fuel prices, inflation and unemployment.
“After the new government was formed in Assam, they decided in their very first cabinet meeting to bring in the UCC. The government should have worried about stopping the price rise in petrol, diesel and cooking gas and should have focused on employment,” Islam said.

He further alleged that the proposed UCC was intended to target the customs and traditions of Muslims.
“The direct aim of their UCC is to attack the customs and traditions of Muslims. We will strongly oppose this implementation of the UCC,” he said.
The Assam government had earlier announced that it plans to introduce the Uniform Civil Code bill in the Assembly. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the proposed law would focus on issues such as minimum marriage age, prohibition of polygamy, women’s property rights and regulation of live-in relationships, while exempting tribal communities and protecting traditional customs and beliefs.
