Three young women were killed after a speeding car rammed into a stationary truck near Gate Hospital in the Matgharia area of Assam's Guwahati on the night of April 25.

The vehicle, bearing registration number AS01GP0562, was travelling from the Geetanagar side when it crashed into the parked truck with significant force. The impact left the car completely mangled, indicating the speed at which it was being driven.

According to the police, the driver fled the scene immediately after the collision and remains at large. An investigation has been launched by Noonmati Police, who are searching for the driver.

The bodies of the victims have been sent to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) morgue. While the identities of all three women were not immediately confirmed, two of the deceased have been identified as Puja Saha from Goalpara and Akanksha Saikia from Sivasagar. Efforts are underway to establish the identity of the third victim.

Preliminary findings suggest the driver survived the crash as the vehicle’s airbag deployed in time.

The incident adds to a series of recent road accidents in Assam. On April 24, a 25-year-old Bihu dancer was killed and eleven others were injured in a late-night collision in the Tamulpur district.

The accident took place at Naokata along the Tamulpur–Nagrijuli road when a traveller carrying members of the ‘Bhaskarjyoti Bihu Husori Team’ collided head-on with a speeding trailer coming from the opposite direction. The troupe was travelling from Haribhanga in Nalbari to Bangalipara in Tamulpur for a Rongali Bihu performance.

The deceased was identified as Nishamani Haloi, a resident of Niz Jhargaon, who died at the scene. Police said the traveller was carrying around 30 members of the troupe at the time.

Several injured persons, including Arun Medhi, Bidyut Das, Jagat Ray, driver Pankaj Baishya, Ankita Das, Ratan Kalita, Nitu Baruah, Shivani Baruah, Kabyashree Saruwa and Dibakar Moran, were taken to hospital. Five of them were reported to be in critical condition and referred to GMCH for advanced treatment.

Police have initiated separate investigations into both incidents.
