Assam Advocate General Devajit Saikia on May 29 said the bail plea of Shyamkanu Mahanta was rejected after the prosecution highlighted several key concerns before the court, including the possibility of absconding and influencing witnesses.

Explaining the court’s observations, Saikia said around six to seven major points were placed before the court during the hearing.

According to the Advocate General, the court observed that Mahanta might abscond if granted bail and also expressed concern that he could influence witnesses connected to the case.

Saikia further said allegations were made that Mahanta had instructed Amritprabha on what to say and what not to say, leading the court to believe that there was a possibility of witness tampering.

Praising the handling of the case by the state, Saikia said competent advocates had been appointed and there had been no negligence from the government side.

“Although allegations were made that the prosecution would delay the matter, nothing of that sort has happened. The case is being handled as a team effort and we are moving ahead with a proper strategy,” he said.

The Advocate General added that the prosecution had carefully selected witnesses who could strengthen the case.

“We do not have any blue-eyed favourites. Not everyone has been made a witness,” he remarked.

Responding to questions over why an Assamese individual based in Singapore was not made an accused in the case, Saikia said the prosecution had placed its findings before the court based on its assessment.

“The court will examine everything and decide who is guilty and who is innocent,” he added.
