Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has described the Northeast as a crucial pillar of India's security architecture, prosperity and strategic strength, asserting that the region occupies a central place in the country's national security framework and foreign policy objectives.

Speaking in Shillong, Singh said the entire eastern region is intrinsically linked to India's strategic destiny, where borders, rivers, cultures and communities are deeply interconnected.

“I believe this entire region is an integral part of India's strategic destiny. When we speak of the East, we are not merely referring to a part of the map, but to a dynamic space where history, geography, security and the future converge,” he said.

Highlighting the significance of the Eastern Command in safeguarding national interests, the Defence Minister said India's strategic strength in the eastern sector is indispensable to the country's overall security and stability.

Singh emphasised that the Northeast should not be viewed merely as a geographical frontier but as a key driver of India's security, economic growth and strategic influence. He noted that the region plays a pivotal role in the successful implementation of India's Act East Policy, which seeks to strengthen connectivity, trade and cooperation with Southeast Asian nations.

The Defence Minister further observed that as India's global stature continues to rise in an increasingly uncertain and rapidly evolving world order, the strategic importance of the Northeast will only grow further.

He stressed that the region's unique geographical position makes it central to India's efforts to enhance regional connectivity, strengthen border infrastructure and deepen engagement with neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia.
