Two suspected cadres of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) were apprehended by Assam Police in Jagun town of Tinsukia district on June 26 in a major counter-insurgency operation.

According to initial reports, the two arrested cadres have been identified by their aliases as Chiyan Asom and Manoj Asom.

Police intercepted the duo while they were travelling in a Swift car (registration number AR20A5892) after allegedly entering Assam via Jairampur in Arunachal Pradesh from Myanmar.

Based on specific intelligence inputs regarding their movement, Assam Police laid a trap and apprehended the two at Jagun Bazaar.

During the operation, police reportedly recovered two AK-56 assault rifles, six magazines and grenades from their possession.

The arrested cadres have been taken to Tinsukia for further interrogation and investigation.

Police are expected to examine their alleged role in ULFA (I) activities and ascertain the purpose of their entry into Assam.

An official statement from Assam Police on the operation is awaited.
