BJP Meghalaya women hold torch rally in Shillong backing women’s reservation bill
Women leaders and workers of BJP Meghalaya on April 29 held a torch procession in Shillong as a symbolic protest against opposition parties accused of obstructing the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament.
The march was jointly organised by the BJP Mahila Morcha and women members of the Scheduled Caste Morcha of the party.
Through the demonstration, BJP women workers in Meghalaya said they were joining women supporters across the country in sending a message that the Women’s Reservation Bill cannot be blocked indefinitely.
Participants stated that a “new light” would continue to shine on the issue of women’s political representation and that efforts to delay the legislation would not succeed forever.
The protest march was led by Meghalaya BJP State President Rikman G Momin, BJP National Spokesperson Guru Prakash Paswan, State Chief Spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang, Minority Morcha President Gagan Jain and Mahila Morcha President Arena Hynniewta.
Party leaders said the rally reflected continued support for greater participation of women in legislative bodies and decision-making institutions.
