Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 21 issued a strong warning against political violence while addressing a gathering in West Bengal, stating that any attack on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers would invite strict legal action.

During his speech, Sarma alleged that workers of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) have engaged in intimidation and violence. He said that if such incidents occur after May 4, the response would be “democratic” but firm, with authorities taking stringent legal measures against those responsible.

Referring to Mamata Banerjee, Sarma asserted that any attempt to target BJP workers would not be tolerated. He further claimed that escalation of violence could lead to constitutional measures, including the possible imposition of President’s Rule in the state.

The Assam Chief Minister also warned that individuals involved in such acts would face consequences under the law. His remarks come amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal, where allegations of post-election violence have frequently been raised by opposition parties.

The ruling TMC has, in the past, rejected such allegations, maintaining that law and order in the state remains under control. No immediate response from the party leadership was available following Sarma’s remarks.
