The heritage-rich Sonai River in Assam’s Nagaon district is facing what local residents describe as an environmental and ecological crisis, following allegations of illegal excavation and soil extraction along its banks.

According to local residents, heavy earthmoving machinery, including excavators, has allegedly been used to dig up sections of the riverbank, while soil from the riverbed is reportedly being extracted and sold. Residents have accused middlemen and brokers of encroaching on parts of the riverbank and illegally trading the land and soil.

The alleged activities have triggered serious concern among villagers, who fear that continued damage to the river’s natural structure could lead to severe flooding during the monsoon season.

Residents warned that thousands of families living in Bhakatgaon and Shimluguri could face the threat of floodwaters if urgent measures are not taken. They said large low-lying areas may be submerged during heavy rainfall due to the weakening of the riverbanks.

In response, local residents have submitted a written complaint to the Circle Officer of Nagaon Sadar, demanding immediate intervention.

Concerned citizens have also appealed to the District Commissioner of Nagaon to investigate the matter and take prompt action against those allegedly involved.
