The process for identification of six bodies recovered by security forces in Manipur on June 10 began at the mortuary of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal on Thursday, June 11.
Family members of the six Naga civilians, who were reported abducted from Leilon Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district on May 13, arrived at JNIMS for identification of the bodies.
The mortal remains of the six civilians were brought to the JNIMS mortuary at around 2:00 am on Thursday following their recovery during a search operation conducted by security forces. The bodies were subsequently handed over for further examination as part of the ongoing investigation.
IGP Zone III Ningshen Worngam said after frantic search operations, the six bodies were recovered. The case has been handed to NIA and an investigation into the incident has already begun.
Meanwhile, tension was reported at the JNIMS premises on Wednesday night after information emerged that the recovered bodies would be brought to the hospital for post-mortem examination. A large number of people gathered near the mortuary complex, leading to a confrontation between sections of the crowd and security personnel deployed at the site.
The situation escalated briefly, following which Manipur Police used tear gas shells to disperse the gathering and prevent further disturbance in the hospital premises.
Security was later strengthened around JNIMS, with authorities maintaining strict vigil to ensure law and order.
The recovery of the six bodies has led to heightened tensions in parts of Manipur, with several organisations demanding a thorough investigation and action against those responsible.
The investigation by the NIA and identification process by the families are currently underway.
